LED Carbon Footprint


The temperature of our planet is slowly rising due to global warming every year and the chief factor responsible for this is Carbon Dioxide emissions. Globally, all lighting accounts for nearly 6% of all CO2 emissions, this comes out to be a total 2 billion tonnes of CO2 in a year. In order to significantly bring down this number, we have to implement a more energy efficient lighting technology. By using LED lamps, we can significantly bring down the CO2 emissions and curb the ever increasing temperature of our planet. By switching over to LED luminaires, we also reduce our electricity consumption by up to 50%. Indirectly this saving of electricity also helps reduce the carbon footprint. A simple way to explain this is as follows, in order to generate electricity we require some source. This source is usually fossil fuels, coal and other non-renewable sources of energy. These sources of energy are detrimental to our cause of reducing the carbon footprint. Currently they cannot be entirely eliminated, but the dependence on it can be reduced to a certain extent. By switching over to LEDs we consume lesser electricity and hence less of the non-renewable sources are used to generate that energy, which in turn results in lesser CO2 emissions. The main hurdles in implementing LED lights successfully are large capital investment, outdated lighting standards and regulations and the risks of switching over to a new untested technology.
